Associate Degree是指副学士,源于美加.其他一些国家地区例如香港、澳洲等也引入该文凭.
在等级上,副学士相当于高级文凭Higher Diploma,一般来说,Higher Diploma指的就是大专.单纯的Diploma,有可能是低级的,只相当于中专,也有一些叫Postgraduate Diploma,是给予学士毕业之后的学进修的一个专科文凭,但等级要比硕士程度低.
就等级而言Associate Degree和Higher Diploma一样,和英国的Foundation degree（准学士）也是一个等级,只是在称呼上不大一样.
不同地区,也会造成一些区别,比如香港的副学士注重通识教育,对继续升学为学士比较有利,而高级文凭则是技术性较强,具有更强的实际操作能力.如果是作为最终学历的话,Higher Diploma的就业竞争力会更强.
