Teenagers usually feel they could survive on their own and are proud of this; for them family is complemented by school,peers,other adults and social or sporting groups to form the network essential for their maturity.
Involvement with friends and acquaintances is felt as an essential part of a teenager’s day to day life and is important for their development.Groups give security which helps them face emotional problems although it may appear to have only a distracting effect.
Teenagers often get a sense of normality from peer group activities by comparing themselves with others.When they are made to feel different to peers,they feel as though they are abnormal and this threatens their sense of self.
Teenagers often feel the peer group is their life support system.They need to spend time with peers as they earlier needed to be with their parents.This is normal,healthy development.Some teenagers have difficulty getting the right balance between peers and family.They may be too dependent on the peer group or unable to attach to groups which is stressful for parents.
