The question of how to educate men and women together has had a long and rather turbulent history.It has been linked to questions of morality in the socialization of children,equality between the sexes,and higher academic achievement for both boys and girls.coeducation education is the integrated education of males and females in the same institution.
In primary school,coeducation exposes all students to a range of male and female-oriented learning experiences.Importantly,boys and girls gain social maturity through valuable interactive play and shared learning.
While girls might set the benchmark in standards,once boys understand the required level,their competitive nature encourages them to strive for mastery,often leading to achievement levels beyond the benchmark.
Girls learn risk-taking attitudes from boys,which help them to venture outside their comfort levels of learning.Girls tend to be very cautious when trying new ideas,activities and strategies to problem-solve a situation,often not engaging for fear of failure.Sometimes,after trying a strategy that does not work,girls may decide they are dumb.
By interacting with boys,they observe boys trying many strategies to solve a particular problem.Boys try strategies as if trying to find the right key to fit a lock.Boys discard these strategies quickly with no loss of self-esteem.
Through this interaction and observation,girls can adopt this attitude,opening many more areas of learning,thus leading to improved learning.Boys learn from these situations that caution can sometimes be warranted and the behaviour of thinking things through can be of benefit.
The first mixed-sex institution of higher learning in China was the Nanjing Higher Normal School,which was renamed National Central University in 1928 and Nanjing University 1949.For thousands of years in China,education,especially higher education,was the privilege of men.In the 1910s women's universities were established such as Ginling Women's University and Peking Girls' Higher Normal School,but coeducation was still prohibited.
Tao Xingzhi,the Chinese advocator of mixed-sex education,proposed The Audit Law for Women Students (规定女子旁听法案) at the meeting of Nanjing Higher Normal Institute held on December 7th,1919.He also proposed that the university recruit female students.The idea was supported by the president Guo Bingwen,academic director Liu Boming,and such famous professors as Lu Zhiwei and Yang Xingfo,but opposed by many famous men of the time.The meeting passed the law and decided to recruit women students next year.Nanjing Higher Normal Institute enrolled eight coeducational Chinese women students in 1920.In the same year Peking University also began to allow women students to audit classes.One of the most notable female students of that time was Jianxiong Wu.
Research supporting single-sex education generally relates to adolescence,when so many other factors come into play.This is the time when the gap between male and female levels of achievement and confidence does increase.
