第一个括号部位不用the,是因为the这个冠词一般是用来特质某个事物或者是前文提到过的东西.而这里要说的是这个人的手被弄得粘粘的,然后他用两根手指拿起了电话.这里既没有特质是哪两根手指,也没有前文提到过所以自然不能用the.
第二个括号部位不用the,则是因为同样的原因.pastry这个词在这里作为宾语是通常意义上的同一种东西,不存在特指.他手上的pastry是这个,电话上,doorknobs上,碗里还是这个,所以不需要用the来强调.如果这个pastry是作为主语出现的话就需要the来告诉读者这个pastry是前文出现的那个.另：这里如果出现the不是说手指,而是在说pastry.
