从实质上说,介词 on 只表我们要议的问题（即论题）,因此只有表研讨,评论或阐述问题的词语,才可接用介词 on,如：to argue / dispute / report / give a lecture on；介词 about 既表论题又表内容；而of 则只表所包的内容,因此只要表所述或所包内容的词语均可接用介词 about 或 of,如：to teach a person / learn / hear / read / know / dream etc about or of ；ignorance about or of ；a story about or of .但决不能说：to teach a person / learn / hear / read / know / dream etc on；ignorance on；a story on,因为 teach,learn,hear,read,know,dream,ignorance,story 之类的词语不表要研讨,评论或阐述的问题,故其后不接用表论题的 on,而只表所述或所包的内容,故只可接用表内容的 about 和 of .我们不可以说：授人/ 学得 / 听得 / 阅读 / 了解.（等）一个“论题”.但我们可以说：授人 / 学得 / 听得 / 阅读 / 了解（等）一定的“内容”.由于about具有既表论题又表内容的双重性,故其应用也具有双重性,如：
1) They argued on that.他们辩论了那个问题.（着辩于该个问题）
They argued about that.他们紧绕着该个中心问题各抒己见.（所述内容紧绕中心）
2) It is ridiculous to comment on such a thing.评论那样的事实属可笑.（着评于该个论题）
