Despite dramatic reports of a complete drying up of the development pipeline and fears of a
dearth of new good quality foorspace coming on line over the next few years,the amount of shopping centre completions has held up well over the past 12 months.In 2009,2.8 million sq ft of new shopping centre foorspace was completed in the UK and this fgure has dropped only marginally in 2010 to almost 2.5 million sq ft.
Figure 1 reveals the key shopping centre openings in 2010.The largest scheme to open this year was The Rock in Bury,formerly being developed by Thornfeld Properties before Hammerson took over the scheme at the beginning of the year when Thornfeld fell into administration.The development provides over 620,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space,anchored by Marks & Spencer and Debenhams,and was 84% let by foorspace when it opened in July.
