There are several individual characteristics that affect thetransfer of training process.Some of these characteristics include motivationto learn and to transfer,personal-ity-related factors and ability-relatedfactors.
Motivation to learn was one of four features of trainingcharacteristic.One critical determinant of training effectiveness is thetrainees’ level of training motivation.Motivation to learn is defined as aspecific desire of a trainee to learn the content of the training program andto fully embrace the training experience.
Besides skill development,such trainees also have more informationand knowledge about where and how the training can be used.Thus,knowledgegains from training have a positive impact on ability to transfer,which inturn have a positive effect on transfer of training.Knowledge acquisitionduring training is affected by various factors such as training methods,trainee ability,trainee motivation to learn,training biases,and traininghistory.For example,if an employee had consistently used skills andtechniques learned from earlier training programs,he or she is likely to haveproblems adapting to or learning distinctly new skills and methods ofperforming.This is especially true if the employee had formed scripts andschema concerning work behavior.This would adversely affect new knowledgeacquisition,which would then lower effective transfer of training.
