We have given important quantitative indications of the growth of producer services and their interaction with manufacturing sectors in the formation of the dramatic growth trajectory that has characterised Swedish econ- omic development since the end of the 1970s.
Proceeding on this track,many questions arguably remain.We have to develop a more elaborated empirical understanding of the relationship between manufacturing and producer services over time.Producer services should form an even more explicit focus in the research agenda of economic geography (Daniels,2006),because analysing the manufacturing sector or the producer services separately could lead to erroneous conclusions about the characteristics of contemporary economies.Although possibly a matter of definition,we have here shown that the manufacturing-related parts of the Swedish economy have never been larger.Indeed,the foundations of economic growth and the role of services has changed,but this has more to do with the transformation pressures that have followed the technology shift than it has to do with the growth of services as separated from manufacturing.
