传统语法的前后时态前后呼应是规则.但是,这条规则有明显不合理的地方.“I didn’t know his mother was a teacher.”一句,符合“时态呼应”规则,在语法上完全正确；然而,听这话的人并不知道“his mother”现在还是不是教师.所以,近几十年,为了表达更为清晰,有的英美人在这种情况下会用“I didn’t know his mother is a teacher.”,表明“his mother”现在是教师(但我以前不知道,现在才知道).这样说和写,完全合理,但“不合法”(传统语法).
“I don’t know you were here.”一句,是完全正确的(主句谓语是现在时态,从句谓语时态不受限制),意思是：我(现在)不知道你曾经在这里.与前面不符.所以不是正确答案.
“I didn’t know you are here.”一句,正是不符合传统“时态呼应”要求而具有合理性的句子,意思是：我以前不知道你(现在)在这里(但现在知道了).
